The Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta is scheduled for two separate weekends in August, giving players a hands-on look at the upcoming title ahead of its October 6 launch. Early Access begins first for those who have pre-ordered or hold qualifying Game Pass subscriptions, followed by a fully open weekend available to everyone.
Early Access runs from August 6 at 12 p.m. PT until August 10 at 10 a.m. PT. This window is restricted to players who pre-ordered the game on Xbox Series X|S or Steam, as well as Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members. During this first weekend, the available content focuses on Horde Siege, described as the evolution of the series’ classic cooperative Horde mode.
The second weekend opens the beta to all players on eligible platforms, regardless of pre-order status. It begins on August 13 at 12 p.m. PT and ends on August 17 at 10 a.m. PT. In addition to Horde Siege, this phase adds the refined 4v4 Versus multiplayer mode. Both weekends feature only a portion of the content that will be available at launch.
Several exclusive rewards are tied to participation in the beta. These unlocks can be earned by completing specific challenges and will carry over into the full game:
- Epic Blast Damage Mags Character Skin for reaching Player Level 20
- Rare Crush the Bug Weapon Skin Set for extracting from Horde Siege eight times on Infantry difficulty or higher
- Crush the Bug Banner for landing 25 headshots
- Crush the Bug Emblem for performing 10 revives
- Crush the Bug Icon for completing five Prototype Lancer chainsaw executions
- Open Beta Medal and First in the Fight Title simply for launching the multiplayer beta
Progress on challenges, medals, rewards, class progression, and player level carries over between the two beta weekends. However, only the exclusive cosmetic rewards, the beta medal, and the special title transfer to the full launch version. Class progression, overall player level, and other medal tracking will reset when the game officially releases.
Access methods vary by platform and purchase type. Digital Xbox pre-orders and Game Pass members should see the beta client appear automatically in their library or be able to find it by searching “Gears Beta.” Steam digital pre-orders receive the client in their Steam library. Physical and Collector’s Edition buyers need to redeem codes provided by their retailer or via email. During the open weekend, the client becomes freely downloadable on all supported platforms with no pre-order required.
On Xbox consoles, an active Game Pass Essentials membership or higher is needed for online play. Steam players do not need a Microsoft account to participate, though linking one is required for cross-platform squad invites.
The beta is explicitly presented as a work-in-progress build. Official notes acknowledge ongoing issues with stability and performance, including potential crashes and frame-rate drops. Accessibility features such as narrator support are still being refined. World-related problems like cover inconsistencies, visual popping, streaming hitches, and out-of-bounds areas may appear. Death camera and execution sequences also have known bugs that can produce jitter or odd camera angles. NVIDIA users are advised to update to GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.74 before launching, as the game will not start on older drivers.
Feedback and bug reports can be submitted through the official support site. The team has asked players to include as much detail and screenshots as possible when reporting issues that are not already listed among the known problems.
Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled for full release on October 6, 2026. The two-weekend beta structure gives the development team a substantial window of live multiplayer data and player feedback before that date. By splitting content between a Horde-focused Early Access period and a broader open weekend that adds Versus, the test also allows different segments of the audience to evaluate the modes most relevant to them.
For players interested in the cooperative side, the first weekend offers an extended look at Horde Siege. Those focused on competitive play will need to wait for the second weekend when 4v4 Versus becomes available. In both cases, the exclusive cosmetic rewards provide a tangible incentive to participate and complete the listed challenges before the beta closes on August 17.
The beta client is already appearing in libraries for eligible pre-order and Game Pass users ahead of the August 6 start. Full open access follows one week later. With the October launch date now less than two months away, the August test represents the primary public opportunity to experience Gears of War: E-Day multiplayer before the game goes live.
