Here Is Your Deep Dive Into Gears Of War: E-Day's Versus Modes And Cosmetics

Versus returns in Gears of War: E-Day as a ground-up rebuild of the series’ competitive multiplayer. The Coalition’s goal is clear: keep the tension, team play, and skill expression that defined classic Gears PvP while updating the experience with new movement tools and a cleaner competitive structure. Here is a quick dive into what to expect out of it.

All Versus modes are strict 4v4. Every player starts each match with the same loadout. There are no weapon mods in Versus, so advantages come from map knowledge, movement, timing, and teamwork rather than pre-match customization. Power Weapons still appear on the map and remain a central part of controlling fights.

Launch Versus Modes

Four core modes will be available at launch, with rotating featured playlists added later.

Team Deathmatch returns with a dynamic respawn system that shifts spawn points based on where the action is happening. Matches are still decided by eliminating the enemy team’s lives rather than reaching a score limit, preserving the classic late-round clutch moments Gears is known for.

Conquest reworks the King of the Hill formula. Zones do not rotate on a timer. Instead, a zone stays active until one team accumulates enough control time to score. This creates longer, more contested fights and allows coordinated squads to steal rounds late.

Demolition is a bomb-based mode. Teams fight for control of a neutral bomb, plant it at one of two enemy sites, and then defend it without respawns until detonation. Three successful plants win the match. The no-respawn defense phase raises the stakes significantly once the bomb is down.

Crucible is a new mode built around a heavy Power Core. The team that holds the Core inside a designated zone builds score, but the zone moves and shrinks as the round continues. The Core itself can release an electrical blast as a last-ditch defensive tool, adding another layer of decision-making during contested holds.

Limited-time modes will appear regularly after launch. Some will support seasonal events, while others will bring back updated versions of older Gears modes to keep the playlist fresh.

Maps

Versus launches with six new maps set in and around the city of Kalona. All of them follow classic Gears principles of symmetry, strong cover, and clear lanes, while also supporting the new movement options such as sliding, jumping, and climbing.

  • Outpost – An abandoned military camp with bunkers, elevation changes, and a connecting bridge.
  • Battleship – A massive vessel under deconstruction, with open decks, contested crossings, and dockside fights.
  • Park – A ruined coastal zoo centered on a large fountain, mixing open sightlines with winding side paths.
  • Precinct – The tight, damaged interiors of the Kalona Police Department, built for close-quarters combat and flanks.
  • Market – A shattered seaside marketplace with long streets, balconies, and dense interior spaces.
  • Skyward – Interconnected rooftops linked by risky jumps and narrow pathways that reward vertical play.

Ranked and Social Playlists

Versus is split into Ranked and Social experiences.

Ranked playlists use mode-specific skill ratings and ranks. After placement matches, players receive a Skill Division (used for matchmaking) and a Rank (which tracks ladder progress). Rank Rating only increases with wins and decreases with losses, and the stakes rise as players move into higher skill brackets. Strict penalties for quitting help maintain match quality.

Social playlists offer a wider mix of options, including 4v4 Quickplay, Player vs Bot matches, limited-time modes, and event playlists. At the end of each match, players can vote on the next mode so lobbies can stay together.

Player vs Bot playlists are available at different difficulty levels and serve as a low-pressure way to learn maps and modes. Two training spaces further support new and returning players: Boot Camp offers a short guided introduction to the new controls and mechanics, while Combat Training provides a fuller multiplayer-style space that supports up to four players and includes weapon testing and light Locust encounters.

Cosmetics and the Anti-Battle Pass Approach

Gears of War: E-Day takes a deliberately old-school approach to cosmetics. Nearly every item in the game can be unlocked by playing. There is no traditional battle pass.
The game launches with more than 60 character skins across COG and Locust forces. Every major character skin that appears in the campaign is available to unlock from day one. New characters and skins will be added each season.

Weapon skins come as full sets. Once unlocked, a skin can be applied to any compatible weapon instead of requiring separate unlocks for each gun. Additional cosmetic types include Poses (lobby and intro/outro stances), Banners, Emblems, Icons, Titles, and Menu Music tracks. One of the launch music options is an instrumental version of Metallica’s "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

How Cosmetics Are Earned

There are two main free paths to unlock items:

Direct unlocks through seasonal challenges, event challenges, achievements, and a Gears 3-inspired medal system.
Coins, the free grind currency earned from matches, leveling up, and medals. Coins are spent in the Barracks on specific items of the player’s choice.

A weekly cap exists on Coins earned from matches, but the cap is high enough to earn a Legendary character skin with room to spare. Coins from medals and level milestones are not capped.

Iron is the optional premium currency. It can be used to buy items immediately from the Barracks or the shop. Its purpose is convenience rather than exclusivity.

The in-game shop rotates weekly discounted offers, but it does not sell exclusive items that disappear permanently. Everything featured in the shop remains available in the Barracks afterward. Bundles also use complete-the-set pricing, so players are only charged for the items they do not already own.

A small number of items sit outside the free earn system: Premium Edition content, charity bundles (with proceeds going to Crisis Text Line), and a limited set of partnership items such as the Metallica "Ride the Lightning" weapon skin set.

Progression Systems

Medals return in a form inspired by Gears of War 3. More than 80 medal series will be available at launch, each with Bronze through Onyx tiers plus a new Diamond tier that awards an exclusive Title. Medals grant Coins and exclusive banners or emblems, and up to three can be displayed on a player’s emblem.

Player Level goes to 100. After reaching the cap, players can Re-Up up to four times for a total of 500 levels of progression. Completing the final Re-Up awards Gears 2-inspired wings displayed next to the player’s name.

Challenges are divided into Weekly, Seasonal, Event, and permanent Foundations categories. Achievements unlock Titles, and several award base characters or Legendary skins. The series’ notorious "Seriously?"-style achievement returns under the name "Dead Serious."

Post-Launch Plans

The Coalition has committed to five themed multiplayer seasons after launch, beginning with Season 1: Emergence. These seasons will add new maps, modes, characters, skins, Horde Siege classes, and limited-time events.

Versus in Gears of War: E-Day aims to feel familiar to longtime fans while giving the competitive side a cleaner ruleset and more expressive movement. Combined with a cosmetics system that prioritizes earning through play, the multiplayer package is one of the most player-friendly the series has offered in years. The open multiplayer beta begins August 6, 2026, for pre-order customers and Game Pass members, with the full game launching on October 6. Will you be playing in August or October?
