Back in June, during this year's E3, Konami released announced that they would be bringing back the Contra series with a brand-new run 'n gun 3D title in the form of Contra: Rogue Corps — and fans of the series were, to put it very lightly, not impressed at all.

Contra: Rogue Corps is ditching the classic 2D style that most of the titles in the iconic action series is known for, going for a more current 3D style — which is actually expected to release for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC(Steam) tomorrow

In a recent interview with Dual Shockers, Contra: Rogue Corps Executive Producer Nobuya Nakazato has revealed that he wouldn't mind that the Contra series went back to its more traditional 2D roots — although he does think that it would take more than just updating the graphics.

"Yeah, I love the old 2D games as well and I'd love to make new ones, but just modernizing the graphics, upgrading the graphics, and creating something new in them would not be the right way to do it, in my opinion. I'd have to come up with a new innovation and maybe change a bit of the genre and then I can start working on one of those."

Although Contra: Rogue Corps isn't releasing until tomorrow, reviews have already started rolling up and the reception the game's had among critics has been mixed at best. By looking at the like to dislike ratio on the game's trailer we can also predict that fans will not be embracing this game with arms wide open.

Hopefully, Konami realizes that fans just want the Contra series to be more like the traditional games and not try to be something alientates its fanbase. In that sense, Nakazato is right since the series needs to do more than just improve on the graphics — but they need to understand that Contra: Rogue Corps isn't it.

From the producer of CONTRA III: THE ALIEN WARS and Director of CONTRA: HARD CORPS, Nobuya Nakazato instills more than 20 years of franchise pedigree into CONTRA: ROGUE CORPS with enormous crazed enemies, over-the-top violence, and a cast of diverse playable characters that add to the irreverent tone of the game.

Contra: Rogue Corps will be available for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC(Steam) on the 24th of September.
