Virtual reality (VR) is having a hard time. After, what seemed to be an explosion of creativity and great ideas, the augmented reality doesn't seem to awaken the general audience’s interest. Sure, you can play the excellent version of
Resident Evil VII on your PlayStation VR, but Oculus Rift, PSVR, HTC VIVE are still waiting for a system-seller that would turn the niche trend into a global phenomenon.
The Oculus Rift team and Insomniac Games, the creators of the upcoming PS4 exclusive
Spider-Man, the
Ratchet & Clank series, and
Sunset Overdrive will try to change the old status quo with
Stormland, a journey through an ever-changing cloudscape to augment yourself and save your artificial friends.
With
Stormland, Insomniac is trying to bring the traditional structure of first-person open world games into VR. The first trailer featuring snippets of the actual gameplay suggests that movement controls are very dynamic as players will be able to glide and fly through slipstreams and can easily scale large cliffs.
Stormland will include both single-player and multiplayer, adding to the game’s lofty ambitions, and it looks just wonderful, despite the system’s limited technical capabilities. Take a look:
The Tempest shattered your android body. Now you must journey through an ever-changing cloudscape to augment yourself and save your friends. Explore an expansive world with complete freedom — bound up cliffs, glide across chasms, and fly through the slipstream with velocity. Detonate explosives, harness electricity, and wield makeshift weapons to overcome titanium sentries and monolithic guardians. Play single-player, or explore forgotten ruins together. It’s time to reclaim your world.
Stormland is coming to the Oculus Rift in 2019.
