There's still a lot of excitement surrounding the planned Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, but last summer, we got some disappointing news about the game. Said to be in "serious trouble" after some big changes behind the scenes at Aspyr Media, it looked like that might be it for the long-awaited title.
The remake of the 2003 hit was first announced in September 2021 and has been in development for nearly four years. However, there was chatter for some time before that about a potential re-release, so it feels like this has been in the works forever.
Embracer Group later said one of its AAA games has been moved to another studio within its group to ensure "the quality bar is where we need it to be for the title." That was widely assumed to be Knights of the Old Republic, and as Saber Interactive started assisting Aspyre last May, it's widely believed they're now in charge.
Speaking to the press during this week's PlayStation Showcase (via SFFGazette.com), Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors was asked where things stand with the game.
"[My] favourite question," he initially responded before adding, "I have no further comments."
Knights of the Old Republic was supposed to be a big part of PlayStation's upcoming slate of games, so these delays are undeniably disappointing. In recent weeks, rumours about an outright cancellation have once again started doing the rounds online, so it remaining stuck in development hell might be the best possible outcome for now.
With any luck, Wingefors is playing coy because an announcement is somewhere on the horizon, though we're not banking on it. "No comment" is better than him confirming the game won't ever be released, anyway.
In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the story takes place almost 4,000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire, where Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith, has unleashed a Sith armada against the Galactic Republic. The player character, as a Jedi, must venture to different planets in the galaxy to defeat Malak.
