Goldeneye 007 for the Nintendo 64 is often considered to be one of the most influential games in the video game industry, paving the way for first-person shooter video games ever since it was released all the way back in August of 1997.
While the classic Nintendo 64 title may have not aged as gracefully, however, its revolutionary ideas have inspired new generations of developers, and we all have the developers at Rare to thank for making the FPS genre what it is today.
As mentioned above, Goldeneye 007 has not aged that well, which is one of the many reasons why some fans have taken it upon themselves to remaster the beloved game in Unreal Engine 4. Such is the case of Goldeneye 25, a fan-made remaster of the Nintendo 64 classic that was expected to release for the original game's 25th anniversary in August of 2022.
Unfortunately, a new report reveals that the Goldeneye 25 project has been officially shut down, following a cease and desist request by MGM/Danjaq; the current rights holders for the James Bond franchise.
The good news, however, is that the developers are not done with the Goldeneye 25 project. In fact, they are still very much committed to the game, although this new project will have to do away with everything involving the James Bond franchise; including the very same levels, music, and overall concept of the original Goldeneye 007 by Rare.
As revealed by independent developer Yannick Zenhäusern, the person in charge of Goldeneye 25, this new project is currently called Spies Don't Die, and will be using the same assets that he had been using to develop the Goldeneye 007 remaster, so not all is completely lost just yet; it's now a spiritual successor of the all-time classic.
