Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto VI may not have an official release date, but fans of the long-running series have been eagerly anticipating the release since the official reveal trailer was released in December of 2023.

While news about the highly anticipated project have been scarce, it is a former Rockstar animator who may have revealed a rather disappointing piece of news; GTA VI may not run at 60 frames per second on consoles.

In a recent interview with video game podcaster Kiwi Talkz, former Rockstar New England animator Mike York declared, "I don't think [the] initial release it'll come out at 60fps unless it's getting those 60fps by [using] an AI upscaler thing like the PlayStation is doing, unless something is coming in and helping it get those 60fps."

York — whose animation credits include Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto Online, and Red Dead Redemption 2 — proceeded to speculate, "I don't think it'll get the 60fps raw out the gate on a base console. PS5, for instance. Maybe PS5 Pro, or whatever, but I still don't think so."

"I don't know what they're doing over there. I don't know how massive this is going to be," the former Rockstar animator admits, adding, "But from my experience, they're going to squeeze every little freaking thing they can out of it and then optimize later for 60 frames because it's not as important as just making the game amazing at 30 frames."

Upon its original release in September of 2013, Grand Theft Auto V ran at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It wouldn't be until the game launched on PC in 2015 that players woud be able to enjoy it running at a stable 60fps. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of the game also run at a stable 60fps in performance mode.

Interestingly, Kiwi Talkz's interview with Mike York was removed at the request of the former Rockstar New England animator, with the podcaster writing on YouTube, "At the request of Mike I have taken down my latest interview, apologies for anyone that hasn't seen it."

"I thought it was a great interview but apparently he said some stuff that he shouldn't have Annoying but unfortunately this stuff sometimes happens," he added before concluding, "The good news is that I will move up the timeline of releasing my [Former PlayStation Studios Head Shawn Layden] interview."

Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.

Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to release for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S later this year.
