The Wonderful 101 is a phenomenal game that was released for the Nintendo Wii U in August of 2013 — less than a year after Nintendo's console launched worldwide — and the reason why you may have never heard of it is, well, because it released for the Wii U; Nintendo's biggest flop in recent years.
Given that the Wii U was a commercial failure, sadly most of the games that released on Nintendo's console also were somewhat of a failure — especially those that were exclusive to Nintendo's platform — and one of those games was PlatinumGames' critically acclaimed The Wonderful 101.
As it turns out, the fact that The Wonderful 101 was not as successful as PlatinumGames may have wanted is exactly one of the main reasons why the developer decided to bring the series back. Now, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, The Wonderful 101: Remastered was announced last week and will be releasing for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam in April.
"Well, we first released Wonderful 101 back in 2013 on Wii U, and for various reasons it wasn't a successful business endeavor for us. Inaba and I have since lamented that not many players were able to experience the game," recently explained head of PlatinumGames Hideki Kamiya.
"I'm not really sure when we first started talking about bringing the game over to new platforms, but we had to consult with Nintendo first. When we sat down with them, we explained our situation: how the game wasn't successful upon release and how we wanted to bring it to modern consoles," Kamiya continued.
"I mean, it was really disappointing for us, you know? We worked so hard to make this high quality game and we were hoping a lot of gamers would play it, but that didn't really pan out. So as a result of our negotiations, the kindness of Nintendo has made both the ports and this campaign possible."
PlatinumGames' Kickstarter campaign for The Wonderful 101: Remastered was successfully funded within hours after it was announced. The fact that it barely took a few hours for the game to be fully funded is further proof of its quality, and now that even more people will get the chance to play it is definitely a win for both players and the developer.
