The Sonic the Hedgehog series has been around for almost 30 years, sicne the first game debuted for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in June of 1991, and giving players a game that promised to rival Nintendo's popular Super Mario Bros. series — which is something it definitely did back in the day.
Sega's beloved mascot has gotten quite a few games under his belt, although the quality of them has been often questioned by players; questioned by fans, even. In recent years, Sonic made a comeback with the critically acclaimed Sonic Mania, and with a live-action filmed that released last year; considered by many to be one of the best video game adaptations ever made.
Now that the Sonic the Hedgehog series' 30th anniversary is just around the corner, Sega has revealed new information that will likely make fans of the Blue Hedgehog quite happy, as the company has some big plans in store for next year.
As first reported by Tails Channel, Sega has revealed that they will be going all out in terms of games, special events, and more exciting Sonic the Hedgehog-related announcements for the character's 30th anniversary. What isn't clear, though, is if these games will be announced next year, or released next year.
Sega also takes the opportunity to reveal some hard facts about the long-running series, including that Sonic the Hedgehog has managed to make over $6 billion in revenue with over 920 million games sold; with the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie making over $300 million at the box office since its release in February of this year.
Whatever Sega has in store for the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, it seems like it will be huge, and we cannot wait for them to reveal more details in the near future.
