The world of video game streaming was rocked this week when alleged reasons for Dr Disrespect's Twitch ban back in 2020 surfaced online. Over the weekend, a former Twitch employee alleged on social media that Dr Disrespect, whose real name is Guy Beahm, was banned from Twitch for "sexting a minor" through the platform's now-defunct Whispers messaging feature. It was even alleged that he had attempted to meet with her at TwitchCon.
Beahm responded that legal obligations from his settlement with Twitch prevented him from speaking on the subject, but stated that he didn't do anything wrong or illegal. He stated that he was probed and settled and that no wrongdoing was found. He also noted that Twitch had paid him what he was owed through his contract.
Still, the speculation persisted through the weekend, and on Monday Midnight Society, the game studio that Beahm co-founded, announced that it terminated its relationship with him. On his stream earlier in the game, Beahm said he was taking a break.
Beahm returned to social media today though, offering a much lengthier statement. In his post, Beahm apologized to his community and supporters and revealed that the had indeed been in contact with an individual minor back in 2017. Furthermore, he admitted that there were "casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate," although he clarified that "nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed."
Beahm stated:
Were there twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes. Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more. Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual. I went through a lengthy arbitration regarding a civil dispute with twitch and that case was resolved by a settlement. Let me be clear, it was not a criminal case against me and no criminal charges have ever been brought against me.
In his statement, Beahm accepted responsibility "from a moral standpoint," but vehemently denied that he is a predator or pedophile, which many online have accused him of being. The post ended with Beahm apologizing to his supporters, lashing out at his "haters," and promising he'll return to streaming after his extended family vacation.
