PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is the most streamed game on Twitch and recently surpassed the 3 million sales mark on Steam. In the game, up to 100 players parachute onto a deserted island and scavenge for weapons, armor and gear with the intent of being the last man standing. There's an added wrinkle that the island has a safe zone where players are free from harm but the size of the safe zone shrinks as the game progresses. The game was released on Steam in March 2017 and sold 2 million copies in two months.
The game is inspired by the popular Japanese action thriller, Battle Royale.
Development was spearheaded by popular modder Brendan Greene, who's better known by his online handle PlayerUnknown. The mods he developed for DayZ and then ARMA 3. His mods and profile became so popular, South Korean game studio Bluehole hired him to become their Creative Director and the studio's first release was Battlegrounds.
It was originally announced that Battlegrounds would also be released on the PS4 but somewhere along the way, it's turned into an Xbox exclusive.
