WARNING, SPOILERS Ahead in the article for World Of Warcraft. You have been warned!

The final chapter of the World of Warcraft: Midnight campaign is now available, bringing a major conclusion to the expansion’s central story arc. Titled “The War of Light and Shadow,” the new chapter sees the various elven factions of Azeroth unite to purify and transform the corrupted Sunwell into a new, harmonious source of power known as the Dawnwell.

This update marks the end of the main Midnight campaign storyline until Patch 12.0.7. Players who complete the chapter will earn the “The War of Light and Shadow” achievement, along with the Silversun Compact Regalia transmog set, the Peridot Dragonhawk mount, and two golden Farstrider statue decor items.

Here is the full cutscene for you to watch:

Following the defeat of the dark Naaru L’ura in the March on Quel’Danas raid, the Sunwell remained severely damaged. In the culminating cinematic of the new chapter, key elven leaders each contribute a powerful artifact or essence to the dormant Darkwell, restoring and evolving it into the Dawnwell:

  • Ranger-General Vereesa Windrunner (High Elves) offers the crown of Anasterian Sunstrider.
  • First Arcanist Thalyssra (Nightborne) provides a fruit from the Arcan’dor tree.
  • General Shandris Feathermoon (Night Elves) contributes a vial of Moonwell water.
  • Magister Umbric (Void Elves) donates a shard of Void energy.
  • Blood Matriarch Liadrin (Blood Elves) adds a mote of Light energy.

The resulting Dawnwell appears less powerful than the original Sunwell but is described as more balanced and harmonious. The event also carries significant lore implications for elven relations on Azeroth.

The completion of this chapter brings several permanent changes to Silvermoon City and elven faction dynamics:

  • High Elves and Void Elves are now fully welcomed back to Silvermoon City.
  • Void Elves have established an embassy in the Umbral Atrium.
  • High Elves occupy the newly named Sunsilver Accord, referencing the Silversun Compact signed between the Silver Covenant and Sunreavers during the campaign.
  • The Darkwell’s corrupting energies have been completely removed, restoring Silvermoon’s skybox to its original clear state.

These updates represent a meaningful reconciliation between the different elven groups, closing a long chapter of division that began years ago in the storyline.

Despite the victory, the chapter ends on a bittersweet note. Xal’atath and thousands of her void forces used the Darkwell as a portal to enter Azeroth proper, making the defeat of L’ura feel hollow. The villain is likely continuing her pursuit of the Worldsoul, setting up future conflicts in either later Midnight patches or the upcoming The Last Titan expansion.

Alleria Windrunner and Turalyon are also missing. They fell through the Darkwell during the events of the Voidstorm raid, and their current status remains unknown. If they survived, they may now be in Xal’atath’s grasp.

With the main campaign now complete, the immediate future of Midnight will focus on side stories and preparation for the next major chapter:

  • Patch 12.0.5 will introduce new lore involving the Twilight’s Blade, the cultists Xal’atath abandoned on the surface.
  • The next full story chapter arrives in Patch 12.0.7.
  • A larger campaign update is planned for Patch 12.1.

Midnight launched on March 2, 2026, as the second chapter of the Worldsoul Saga. The expansion took players back to Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman, introduced the new zone of Harandar, and featured the Voidstorm raid as its centerpiece.

The Dawnwell transformation and elven reconciliation provide a satisfying emotional payoff for players who have followed the elven storyline across multiple expansions. At the same time, the escape of Xal’atath and the disappearance of Alleria and Turalyon keep the larger Worldsoul Saga narrative tense and unresolved.

Players who have not yet completed the new chapter can access it immediately through the campaign journal. Those looking to earn the new rewards should make sure to finish “The War of Light and Shadow” before diving into the upcoming patch content.

The conclusion of Midnight’s main campaign leaves Azeroth in a changed but hopeful state for its elven inhabitants, while the threat of Xal’atath looms larger than ever. The stage is now set for the saga’s next major developments later this year.
