As LEGO continues its journey through decades of gaming history, it appears the next stop is Sony's original PlayStation console.
New details surrounding the rumored LEGO PlayStation set have emerged, revealing a release date, piece count, and some exciting features and Easter eggs.
According to the latest from Brick Tap, the LEGO PlayStation (#72306) will be a near 1:1 scale recreation of the original PlayStation. The 1,911-piece set will include the console itself along with the original PlayStation controller, complete with its classic joystick-free design. It will measure 26cm wide and 17cm tall when opened.
The rumor notes that the sides of the set will pull out, revealing small dioramas for Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. It also teases a build "full of easter eggs and nice part usage."
The set will reportedly release on October 1st and cost $160.
The original PlayStation released in Japan in December 1994, followed by a North American launch in September 1995. It was an immediate hit, selling roughly 100,000 during its first weekend and reaching one million U.S. sales within six months.
Sales aside, the PlayStation is considered to be among one of the most important consoles in gaming history. Not only was it Sony's first attempt at entering the market, but it also arrived as the industry began transitioning from 2D games to polygonal 3D gaming. Its 32-bit processor was designed to handle hundreds of thousands of polygons.
Sony also embraced CD-ROMs rather than cartridges, which offered developers more storage, enabling larger and more cinematic games. The PlayStation would become home to iconic games and franchises such as Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Tekken, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, and Tomb Raider.
There are also conflicting reports regarding a gift-with-purchase for the PlayStation. Previous rumors indicated that the LEGO Astro Bot (#40899) would be included for free with all LEGO PlayStation purchases. However, it's now being suggested that this original plan was pivoted and that will now be a standalone release.
While Astro Bot has emerged to become one of PlayStation's most iconic characters in recent years, there was never an Astro Bot game released on the original PlayStation. The first game to feature little robots was 2013's The Playroom on the PS4. These would eventually go on to inspire the actual Astro, which was more prominently featured on the PS VR with The Playroom VR in 2026. Astro really came into the spotlight in 2020 with Astro's Playroom, a rather in-depth game included with every PlayStation 5 that helped introduce the console's many new features. In 2024, Astro became mainstream with the release of Astro Bot.
So is Astro worthy of LEGO release? Absolutely! Does it make sense tying it in with the LEGO PlayStation? Probably not.
As always, we'll continue to track any new information we get regarding the LEGO PlayStation.
