Someone’s gone and pulled the Heavenly Spear from its resting place, and it’s not looking good for the mortal world. At least, that’s the chaotic energy coming out of the new trailer for Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear, unveiled during today’s live stream on the Xbox Games Showcase. Check out the awesome new trailer highlighting all of the new content that you will be able to play with soon:

Arriving this Fall 2025, Heavenly Spear is the first major expansion for Age of Mythology: Retold, the 2024 remaster of the classic real-time strategy game. This new expansion dives headfirst into Japanese mythology, introducing a full Japanese pantheon with 12 new gods, each boasting unique god powers, divine technologies, and legendary myth units.

Players will take on a brand-new campaign centered around Yasuko, a humble farm girl who stumbles upon a powerful artifact the titular and legendary Heavenly Spear. She quickly finds herself caught in an escalating divine war. Her journey spans across 12 story missions, pitting her against the villainous spider-demon Jorogumo, the warlord Kagemasa, and eventually the Titan of the Japanese pantheon, the terrifying Yamata no Orochi.

Expect to see an arsenal of new Japanese mythological and historical units including:

  • Kitsune – mystical fox spirits
  • Jorogumo – spider-women with deadly intentions
  • Oni – brutal, club-wielding ogres
  • Samurai and Shinobi – elite warriors of feudal Japan

True to the series’ formula, Heavenly Spear blends RTS strategy with mythological flair. The expansion also teases enhanced visuals and storytelling, suggesting that Age of Mythology: Retold may be taking bolder narrative and visual strides compared to the more nostalgic presentation of the base game.

This expansion marks a major step forward for World’s Edge and Forgotten Empires, developers of Age of Mythology: Retold. The base game itself brought the 2002 RTS into the modern era with updated graphics, quality-of-life features, and new balance adjustments. Heavenly Spear looks to build on that legacy by expanding the mythological universe and taking creative risks with lesser-explored legends.

Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and PlayStation 5 when it launches later this fall.
