Blizzard built a gamepad mode into World of Warcraft: Forever. It is not an addon overlay. It is in the client, and the BlizzCon floor already let people press a stick and walk off Zephras Isle with it.
The official What's Next recap lists gamepad support next to the other opt-in choices: transmog, Classic or modern visual presets, HD or SD character models, and Classic animations on the HD bodies. The line is that you pick the look and the play setup that feels right.
Show-floor text called the feature alpha. The pad only worked on the Skyborne 1-10 start. The dungeon playtest stayed on keyboard. The game detects a controller. Press any button in that starting zone and the UI flips.
Players have walked the booth and said the feature worked out of the box. A radial menu covers a lot of the interface. Action bars get a controller layout instead of a keyboard grid. Official YouTube posted a diagram and close-ups of those bars.
The button map on the floor followed a standard Xbox pattern. Sticks for move and camera. Face buttons for abilities, interact, and jump. D-pad for more spells. Bumpers and triggers for targeting and swapping panels. A separate button opens the gamepad menu.
This is the first official built-in option in any version of WoW. Players have been doing it for years with ConsolePort and similar addons, including on Steam Deck and other handhelds. Associate Game Director Paul Kubit said retail "sort of" has controller support through those addons. Official out-of-the-box support is what the team is excited to ship in Forever. Check out Icyveins video showing you all the details about playing Warcraft Forever with a controller!
Kubit would not lock retail to the same plan. "Never say never for features like that," he said, then pointed at the bind count in modern WoW compared with Classic or Forever. Senior Game Designer Kim Flack was in that same roundtable. The takeaway they left was simple: watch how people react to Forever's pad, then decide what retail can carry.
Consoles are a different question. Associate Production Director Clay Stone told interviewers there was nothing to say about consoles right now. The support is for people who want a joystick on PC. He also said leveling a character on the provided layout felt great.
That last part matters because Forever's first hours are built for a long walk, not a mythic key. Zephras Isle is a 1-12 island start. Class trainers still exist. Mana still runs out on level 1 mobs. The pad mode is being tested on that loop first, which is the kind of play where a stick and a radial menu can feel natural.
The rest of Forever does not change because a controller is in the box. Launch is November 4. Beta starts September 17 and runs through October 21. Testers cap at 30. There are no traditional realms. You pick Normal, PvP, Roleplay, or later Hardcore. Nine new dungeons and the December raids still sit on the same character. HD and SD still toggle. Transmog still opts in.
What the pad has to survive is the rest of that sheet. Targeting in a contested quest camp. Loot windows. Vendor lists. Group invites when you cannot see a realm tag. Raid frames in a 10-player Barrow Deeps, which is not in the current demo. Healing on a pad is the question retail veterans will ask first. Forever has fewer binds than midnight-era retail. That is why the team started here.
Handheld PC players already treated ConsolePort as the unofficial port. Official support means the UI, accessibility options, and patch notes move with Blizzard instead of waiting on an addon author to chase API changes. Icy Veins made that same point. The caveat they flagged is also still true. Official support has only been announced for Forever.
Thursday's beta is the first wide test. If you own an Epic Pack or the Collection, the pad is part of what you can try on Zephras. If you only opted in, you are still in a lottery. November 4 is when the rest of the world finds out whether "press any button to switch" holds up past level 10.
