Since the announcement of Xbox One Backwards Compatibility during its E3 press conference in 2015, it has been one of the most popular features on the Microsoft console. Xbox fans have been enjoying the opportunity to play some of their favorite Xbox 360 and even the original Xbox titles on their Xbox One, with more titles being added regularly to the list of available games every month.
Xbox One owners can check out more than 500 Xbox 360 and Xbox tittles right now, but PlayStation 4 users find themselves in a different situation, as it’s not possible to play games from older platforms by inserting a disc or downloading them from the PlayStation Network. Of course, you can try your luck using PlayStation Now which will let you stream older PlayStation games to your PS4 over your home via internet connection, but it's not an ideal solution billing you $19.99 each month.
A year ago, Shawn Layden, who's in charge of global game development at Sony, revealed that the company had no plans to make backwards compatibility a feature on the PS4. Layden explained that, “
When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much.” It looks like the company's approach has changed drastically.
According to Marcus Sellars, one of the few insiders in the industry that actually know what they're talking about (he had confirmed that
Spyro Reignited Trilogy exists long before Activision officially announced it in April), "
Sony are planning to bring PS3 backwards compatibility to the PS4."
That's not all, as Twitter user _SimplyG has found a PS4 store glitch, which allows you to check out the "
Best Of PS3" section using the system's interface. That screen would not load content, only the menu, but with E3 2018 being just around the corner, there will undoubtedly be new announcements.
