Peacock has shared the first image from its upcoming Twisted Metal series while also announcing that the trailer will drop tomorrow. The poster features star Anthony Mackie behind the wheel of a vehicle equipped with a machine gun. In the background, we see the iconic ice cream truck driven by Sweet Tooth.
Twisted Metal is described as a "high-octane action comedy" and stars Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz. Although the adaptation is inspired by the PlayStation video game franchise, the show itself is an original take written by Michael Jonathan Smith, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick.
According to the synopsis, Twisted Metal follows “a motor-mouthed outsider [who is] offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.”
In the video games, you play as contestants who enter a bizarre vehicular combat tournament hosted by a mysterious man named Calypso. He promises to grant the winner of the tournament their deepest wish, though usually there's some sort of cruel twist involved with making their dream a reality.
It would appear that the television series is ditching the concept of a vehicular combat tournament in favor of a more straightforward plot. However, the most important element -- vehicles rigged with explosive weaponry -- is still very much at the forefront. Fans can also count on seeing some of their favorite characters from the games appear, such as Sweet Tooth, who will be played by Will Arnett.
While fans got their first glimpse via a poster today, they can check back tomorrow -- Friday, April 28 -- for the first teaser trailer. No premiere date has been announced, although there are reports that the series will debut in July. The season will consist of 10 episodes, available only on the Peacock streaming service.
Twisted Metal is the latest adaptation based on a popular PlayStation video game franchise and it follows on the heels of HBO's series The Last of Us, which was based on Naughty Dog's award-winning games. We've also seen television series adaptations of Halo, which is featured on Paramount+, and The Witcher, which can be found on Netflix. Amazon Prime has also recently ordered a God of War series, which is another popular PlayStation franchise. And, of course, we've seen multiple movies such as Uncharted and Sonic the Hedgehog.
