Sony's next-gen console, the coveted PlayStation 5, is only a couple of days away from hitting store shelves in some regions around the world, so these are exciting times for fans who simply cannot wait any longer until they finally get to play on Sony's new hardware.
Of course, some media outlets have already had access to the console for reviewing purposes, and they have been sharing unboxing videos that have given us a closer, and even better look at the PlayStation 5; making everyone wish the console was already here.
Sony gave us our first look at their next-gen console back in June of this year, so we have been able to see just how sleek it is, but we had no idea what the size of this new machine was until the media outlets got their hands on it, and it turns out that the PlayStation 5 is actually quite massive; to the point it makes its predecessors look small in comparison.
In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Sony's Senior Art Director Yujin Morisawa revealed some fascinating details about the PlayStation 5's sleek design, and also explained that in very early stages the console was actually a lot larger than it is now.
There was this idea online, after Sony finally unveiled the PlayStation 5, that the next-gen console looked like a bunch of other items such as routers, the beak of a duck, and even the Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings, but Morisawa mentions that this didn't bother him, as it shows that it is a welcoming and design that looks familiar to people.
"When you design something, you want to make it feel comfortable. Sometimes it looks like a plant or some animal or some object. I think that's more comfortable than something that's weird, or something that they've never seen before," Morisawa explained.
"I think there's a balance there," he continued. "I think it's funny, though. I'm not offended or anything. I really like what people are playing with. I don't think it's a bad thing. I think it's good energy."
Morisawa also explains that his early drawings made the PlayStation 5 look a lot bigger than it is now, and that's mainly because he didn't know what the engineers were doing, so he designed the console bigger in case additional space was needed.
"When I started drawing, it was much larger even though I didn't know what engineering was going to do," Morisawa revealed, adding that "It's kind of funny that engineering actually told me it's too big. So, I actually had to shrink it down a little bit from the first drawing."
What's even more interesting is that at one point they wanted to make the PlayStation 5 smaller than it is now, but that would've been problematic from an engineering standpoint.
"We wanted to get it much smaller, so it's the perfect size right now. If I made it thinner, there would be less air flow to it. It would disturb the player while they are playing. Form-factor wise, I drew a perfect line around it and tried hit the perfect size."
PlayStation 5 is expected to launch on Thursday the 12th of November in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea; worldwide release on Thursday the 19th of November.
