The Last of Us Part II was finally released in June of this year, giving players the long-awaited sequel to what is widely considered one of the best games on the PlayStation 3, as well as one of Naughty Dog's best video games ever made.
A mere three days after the game ws released, PlayStation officially revealed that The Last of Us Part II had already managed to sell a very impressive 4 million copies; in spite of key story elements having been leaked weeks prior to the official release.
The Last of Us Part II was also able to top the PlayStation Store charts for the month of June — and quite effortlessly, as well — in spite of all the controversy surrounding it. Information revealed by the NPD Group revealed that Naughty Dog's new survival-horror title was also June's best-selling game; dehtroning Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PlayStation 4.
NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella hs recently shared his monthly video game sales report, revealing that The Last of Us Part II's performance in regards to number of copies sold has slightly dropped as July's 4th best-selling title; life-to-date dollar sales, however, reveals something quite interesting.
According to Piscatella, The Last of Us Part II is now the third highest-grossing video game published by Sony in the company's history in the United States, trailing behind Insomniac Games and Santa Monica Studio's critically acclaimed MARVEL's Spider-Man and God of War, respectively; both of which games released in 2018.
The Last of Us Part II performing as well as it has is definitely surprising, considering that most fans of the original game have not responded well to the changes made by Naughty Dog. There is no denying that pedigree alone would give the game an edge, but it will be interesting to see how the controversial title keeps performing now that the hype has begun to set in.
