With Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Arcane, and Castlevania in their portfolio, Netflix is setting the pace for crafting adult animated series based on video game IPs. Now, the streamer is looking to add another hit to its platform with Devil May Cry.
Just last month, we got a glimpse of the Devil May Cry anime at Netflix's Drop 01 event and now, the streamer is back with another fan event, Netflix Geeked Week, which provides even more updates on the video game anime.
The Drop 01 event gave fans a short teaser for the DMC anime but the footage released for Geeked Week takes fans behind-the-scenes.
Show creator Adi Shankar sat down to inform fans that he's been hard at work on the series ever since it was first announced back in 2018.
The video also contains some action-packed animatics and a pulse-pounding preview of what will be a metal-inspired soundtrack.
Said Shankar, "My development partner, Alex Larson and I, we've been working on this show, everyday, since 2018. Our goal, wasn't to just pump out another animated program. My goal is to make one of the best shows on the Netflix platform. Period."
"We have awesome partners in Studio Mir. They are one of, if not the best, animation studio out there that does this type of work. Their portfolio is hit, after hit, after it. It speaks for itself."
Studio Mir is a South Korea-based animation studio who are responsible for the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Netflix's excellent Voltron animated series, Dota: Dragon's Blood, My Adventures with Superman, and more. If they're handling the animation, expect crisp and fluid action as their calling card is exceptional, animated hand-to-hand combat.
Curiously, unlike most of the trailers and featurettes released for Geeked Week 2023, the footage for Devil May Cry ends with the tag, "Coming Soon", whereas the other shows all give a 2024 release date. Perhaps the DMC anime isn't as far along as the other projects?
Stay tuned for further coverage on the Devil May Cry anime as we await new trailers and confirmation of an exact release date . As Geeked Week focuses on titles set to be released within the next 12 months, we're hopeful the series will get released in 2024.
Not much is known about the anime but Shankar has confirmed that both Dante and Vergil, the twin sons of the demon Sparda and human Eva, will appear in the show.
