During Sony's latest corporate report, the company signalled that they are more than open to the idea of purchasing more video game developers in order to make their PlayStation Studios grow — which would prove to be an effective strategy moving into the new generation of consoles.
The company expects to accelerate the release of PlayStation-exclusive titles, and buying out more video game developers will help them reach this goal more efficiently.
"In addition to improving the personnel and work environment in its own studios, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) continues to invest in, or acquire, firms with abundant creativity and cutting-edge technologies to build up Worldwide Studios (WWS), an association of first-party title production studios," read a segment of Sony's corporate report.
"As of May 31, 2020, WWS owns 14 studios and has become one of the world's leading game-developer networks. With hit series like The Last of Us, God of War, and Uncharted, it is a strong engine for content IP production."
In August of 2019, Sony made headlines when they announced that MARVEL's Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank series developer Insomniac Games was the latest studio they had purchased; to the dismay of many Xbox players who wanted a new Sunset Overdrive.
During the PlayStation 5's special presentation that took place in June we saw that the developer was already working on MARVEL's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart; two titles that have been confirmed to be PlayStation 5 exclusives.
Of course, big companies like Sony are always open to the idea of purchasing new studios, but it looks like Sony really means business this time, as they're going all out to make the PlayStation 5 the best video game platform of the next generation of comsles.
Right now it is impossible to predict what studios Sony could be keeping an eye on, but we can't wait to see what they can pull up their sleeves.
