For years, Clash of Clans fans have been hounding Supercell to develop a television series based on the beloved mobile game. Well, now it's finally happening!
Supercell and Netflix have announced a new partnership that will see Clash of Clans reimagined as an animated series on the streaming giant. The newly announced series is in pre-production and "will build on the beloved worlds of Supercell franchises Clash of Clans and Clash Royale," according to the press release.
Developed by Supercell and released on iOS and Android in 2012, Clash of Clans is one of the world's most popular strategy games with over four billion downloads and 180 billion gameplay hours. The premise of the game is fairly simple; you oversee a village and must build it up to be as strong as possible. Of course, there are other factors at play, including other players who can raid your village and steal your resources. Clash Royale is set in the same universe as Clash of Clans but with card-based strategy gameplay.
On the surface, a strategy game with no specifically named characters may feel like it would be difficult to pull off. But through the release of many animated shorts and commercials, Supercell has expanded on the broader universe of Clash of Clans, giving its generic characters endearing personalities.
The Barbarian, for example, is portrayed as a goofy, enthusiastic warrior, always ready to charge into battle without hesitation. The charismatic Hog Rider is confident and bold, known for his iconic battle cry: "Hog Riiider!" If Supercell has managed to make these nameless characters so appealing and memorable with simple shorts and commercials, imagine what they can do with a fully animated series.
Fletcher Moules (Entergalactic, Agent Elvis), who has directed many of the previously released Clash of Clans animated videos, will serve as showrunner and is joined by writer Ron Weiner (Silicon Valley, 30 Rock, Futurama, Arrested Development). The series will be animated by ICON Creative Studio, Canada's largest independently owned owned CG Animation Studio, which has previously worked on hit movies and shows such as Star Wars Young Jedi Adventures, Monsters at Work, Prep & Landing, Disney Junior Ariel, and more.
“Clash has been a global gaming phenomenon for over a decade — filled with humor, action, and unforgettable characters perfect for an animated series adaptation,” said John Derderian, Vice President of Animation Series at Netflix. “Working with the incredible team at Supercell, Fletcher Moules, and Ron Weiner, we’re bringing all the fun, chaos, and spirit of the world of Clash to life in a whole new way. We can’t wait for fans — old and new — to experience the mayhem.”
“We’re thrilled to be working with Netflix and this creative team to bring the world of CLASH to life,” added Curtis Lelash, the head of film and TV at Supercell. “Think epic battles, immaculate Barbarian mustaches, and the kind of humor our players know and love. They’ve been asking for a Clash series forever, and we’re beyond excited to finally say: It’s happening!”
Details such as casting and a release date will be shared later.
