Just days after announced a new animated series based on the Minecraft video game, Netflix has announced that another video game adaptation will hit the streaming platform later this year. Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is a new animated series based on an action-adventure video game franchise.
The new series takes place after the events of the recent Survivor Trilogy video games — Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018) — "and finds Lara abandoning her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures."
The series will star actress Hayley Atwell (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Marvel's What If...?) as the voice the iconic archaeologist Lara Croft, who must return home "when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection."
"Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become," Netflix teases.
Starring alongside Atwell in the title role is an incredibly talented voice cast that includes Allen Maldonado as Zip, and Earl Baylon reprising hi s role as Jonah Maiva from the video game.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is set to debut exclusively on Netflix on October 10th.
The series is executive produced and written by Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja). Executive producers include dj2 Entertainment founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog, Life is Strange), along with Timothy I. Stevenson; Jacob Robinson (Skull Island) under his company Tractor Pants; and Dallas Dickinson and Noah Hughes for Crystal Dynamics; as well as Howard Bliss and Jen Chambers. Powerhouse Animation is the animation studio, with Brad Graeber serving as executive producer.
The first Tomb Raider game debuted in 1996, and more than 25 years later the series is still going strong. Combined, the games have sold over 95 million copies worldwide since 2022, generating close to $1.2 billion since 2002. While the IP has shifted owners over the years, the franchise remains as strong as ever with Lara Croft remaining one of the most recognizable characters in media.
Tomb Raider has since expanded beyond video games with numerous film adaptations, comic books, and novels. 2018's live-action movie from Warner Bros. Pictures was based on the 2013 video game and starred Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. The adaptation was released to mixed reviews and grossed $274.7 million worldwide, just enough to break even according to estimates.
