Released earlier this month, Black Myth: Wukong is one of 2024's biggest games. As of August 23, it had sold 10 million units, making it one of the fastest-selling games of all time.
Making this feat all the more impressive is the fact that it was only released for PlayStation 5 and PC. Although an Xbox Series X|S version is planned to come at a later date, nobody was sure of the reason for the delayed launch.
Rumors initially suggested that Black Myth: Wukong's delay on Xbox was due to a memory leak issue. An Xbox developer at Gamescom reportedly spoke to Spanish leaker eXtas1s and said that the game had not been able to pass bug detection tests and was therefore delayed indefinitely.
However, in recent dates, a new report has emerged that claims the reason Black Myth: Wukong is not available on Xbox right now is due to an exclusivity deal with Sony. Forbes was the first to report on this deal with IGN following with and corroborating the report from "a knowledgeable source."
According to IGN:
IGN understands that no tech issue that would delay Black Myth: Wukong has been reported to Xbox. Rather, the Xbox delay is the result of an exclusivity deal neither Game Science nor Sony have publicized, the source said. The source described the rumors of tech issues on Xbox as "inaccurate."
Concerns regarding the Xbox version of Black Myth: Wukongdate back to June when people noticed that the trailer shown at Summer Game Fest didn't see Xbox Series X|S. In its FAQ, developer Game Science stated that they were still optimizing the Xbox version.
"We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards, so it won't release simultaneously with the other platforms," Game Science's FAQ read. "We apologize for the delay and aim to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards."
Microsoft followed up with its own statement on June 21st, stating: "We’re excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We can't comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the center of that."
At this point, it's currently unclear when the Xbox version of Black Myth: Wukong will be released. But it doesn't seem to be affecting the game's sales.
