The Gears of War: E-Day multiplayer beta has set a new all-time concurrent player record for the franchise on Steam. Tracking data shows the game peaked at 22,084 simultaneous players on August 14 during the second weekend of the open beta. Which is insane considering the weekend is just getting starting, so we will see that number get crushed later today and over the weekend.
That number clears the previous high set during the limited early-access period the week before, when the beta first climbed above 14,000 concurrent users. It also sits well clear of every prior Gears of War release on the platform. Gears 5 held the old franchise record with a peak of 10,196 players. Gears Tactics reached 7,351, while the more recent Gears of War: Reloaded topped out at 4,819.
The jump between the two beta weekends reflects the change in access rules. The first session, which ran August 6 to 10, was limited to players who had pre-ordered the game or held an active Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription. The second window, which began August 13 and runs through August 17, opened the beta to all players on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Steam. The broader availability produced a clear increase in peak concurrency on Steam.
Steam figures only represent a small part of the total audience. A large share of players is on Xbox consoles and through Game Pass, where public concurrent numbers are not available in the same way. Even with that limitation, the Steam performance provides a useful public indicator of interest, especially for a series that has traditionally drawn the majority of its audience on Xbox hardware.
The beta offers two modes: 4v4 Versus and 12-player Horde Siege. Both have been available across the test periods with the same feature set. The higher player counts in the open weekend suggest that the combination of free access, cross-play support, and curiosity about the new entry is pulling in a wider group than the series has typically managed on PC during previous launches or tests. Play the beta now and get some cosmetic rewards for the full release.
Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with day-one availability on Game Pass. The multiplayer beta remains the most substantial public look at the game’s online systems before that date. Reaching a new series high on Steam during a free test, then breaking that high again once the beta opened fully, gives The Coalition and Xbox a positive signal as they head into the final pre-launch stretch.
Franchise peaks on Steam have never been massive compared with some other multiplayer shooters. Gears has remained more closely tied to Xbox ecosystems, and PC numbers have historically stayed modest. Clearing the previous records by a wide margin in a beta environment, and then doing it a second time with open access, points to stronger PC interest than the series has shown in recent years.
The open beta continues through August 17. Whether the concurrent numbers climb higher still or settle as the weekend progresses will depend on returning players and ongoing word of mouth. For now, 22,084 stands as the highest concurrent total the Gears of War series has recorded on Steam, achieved while the game is still in a temporary multiplayer test state.
The final release is less than two months away. Beta player counts will not decide the game’s long-term performance, but they do show that the combination of Game Pass reach, cross-play, and a new mainline entry has generated enough attention to push the franchise to new platform-specific highs before launch. The Coalition will carry that momentum into the remaining development and tuning period knowing the PC side of the audience has already shown up in record numbers for the series.
