Meltan and Melmetal are new additions to the mobile game and to the Pokémon franchise in general, making them likely to be the first members of Generation 8, the long awaited next core title in the
Pokémon series. The creatures are logged under "Unknown Pokédex" in the game, and don't belong to any of the original seven regions it appears.
This makes them highly sought after, so of course they are incredibly rare and don't appear in the wild. Oh - and they require a whopping 400 candy to evolve. Sure, Pokémon like Magikarp, Feebas, Wailmer, and Swablu already need that many candy so maybe it might not seem like big deal to casual players. The problem is the extreme rarity of the Pokemon makes 400 candy impossible to find.
How do you even catch Meltan? The first way introduced was by a special Research Quest in the game, but that serves up two few candy for too much work. The smartest and easiest way to obtain the 400 candy needed to evolve your Meltan into a Melmetal is by connecting your game to a
Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and
Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! account and transferring Pokémon into the new Pokémon Go Park that in Fuschia City. This will earn you a Mystery Box which when opened allows Meltan to appear in your area for thirty minutes.
Thirty minutes is a short time, but Niantic released a tweed saying that they have they have taken measures to fix that. With the most recent update, many more Meltan will appear from a Mystery Box before. This makes it much easier for trainers to gather the hundreds of candy they need to evolve and get Meltan's even rarer evolutionary form, Melmetal.
Unfortunately after you use the box and your time runs out, you will have to wait seven days before you can activate the Mystery Box again - but this is definitely going to be a welcome improvement to Trainers who were pulling their hair out trying to figure out how they would complete their Pokédex. The question is, is this enough to get you to seek this Pokemon? Let us know!
