Clone Pokémon were originlly introduced all the way back in 1999 when
Mewtwo Strikes Back, the very first Pokémon-themed film released in theaters. During the movie the antagonist (Mewtwo) creates clone versions of the Pokémon that belong to the trainers which challenge him. These include but are not limited to Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, and Pikachu.
In honor of Pokémon Day - which is today, February 27th, 2020 - Netflix has released the CG remake of the film, titled
Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution. Thanks in turn to this release, Niantic has chosen to take this opportunity to introduce Clone Pokémon as the newest feature in their augmented reality mobile game.
Trainers who have logged into the game over the last day or so will have noticed that Raid Bosses now include the original Kanto trio of Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur. These creatures bear the same markings shown in the film so that they can be recognized in future battles or Gym line-ups.
In addition to these Clone Raid Battles there will be one other Pokémon showing his face during this time - Pikachu! Fans using the Go Snapshot feature during the Clone Event may notice the clone version of Pikachu pop up bearing different markings on his ears so make sure to take many photos during this time!
