In case you've been living under a rock for the last couple of months, Warner Bros. and Legendary have released two amazing trailers for
Detective Pikachu, the first live-action
Pokémon movie, and it promises to deliver the goods.
Justice Smith — who plays the character of Tim Goodman in the movie — has revealed in a recent interview with Vulture
that
Detective Pikachu has been completely shot in film instead of being filmed digitally like most movies these days.
The reason for this, according to Smith, is so that the movie looks more like a noir type of film, which is the perfect look for a movie like
Detective Pikachu; which aims for an urban noir setting, as seen in both trailers.
"
There wasn’t a lot of green screen", explained Justice Smith when asked about the use of green screens and CGI Pokémon. "
Our director, Rob Letterman — I’m getting better at saying last names, Rob Letterman — wanted to shoot on location as much as possible. We shot in London, and for like a week in Scotland which is like a desktop background. He had this vision to put the Pokémon up against this urban backdrop and use this gray, grainy filter. We shot on film so it gave it that natural grain."
Detective Pikachu is the live-action adaptation of the video game of the same name, which released in February of 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS. The movie is directed by Rob Letterman, and boasts the talents of Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu and Justice Smith as Tim Goodman.
The first-ever live-action Pokémon movie, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character in the first-ever live-action movie based on the iconic face of the global Pokémon brand—one of the world’s most popular, multi-generation entertainment properties and most successful media franchises of all time.
Detective Pikachu will release in theatres on the 10th of May in 2019.
