Jumanji: The Next Level will be making its debut on December 13th. It's a sequel to 2017's
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and will see Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black reprise their roles — as well as introducing some other well-known actors such as Awkwafina and Danny Devito.
Though technically existing within the same continuity of the original
Jumanji film from 1995, the franchise has been basically revamped entirely.
Jumanji now revolves around a magical video game console which sucks you into a virtual world and the body of one of its characters.
With that in mind, during a recent interview with
Total Film Magazine, two of its stars suggested some ideas for where they would like to see the franchise go in the future. Firstly, Jack Black referenced the fact that his two
Jumanji films have gone up against Star Wars instalments at the box office upon release —
more on that here.
“I always thought we should be called Jumanji Strikes Back if we’re going up against another Star Wars [Note: the Next Level is released just a week before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker]. I would like to go into space," Black told the magazine.
Beyond just the setting of the film, Karen Gillan had an interesting idea for a dynamic that could feature in a future film — that being that a brutish man ends up in the body of a woman and learns what it's like to be objectified and the like.
“I think it would be really fun to play a really chauvinistic man. They get trapped in my body, and understand what it’s like to feel like a girl, and what it feels like to be objectified, and then suddenly have a whole epiphany about [their] behaviour," Gillan told the publication before Dwayne Johnson added to that idea.
“I’ve been thinking about that… My mind may change. But I think a female has to embody Dr. Smolder Bravestone. The oestrogen will be wonderfully mixed with the testosterone. And we’ll see what happens.”
In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.
Jumanji: The Next Level is set to release in theatres on December 13th, 2019.
