According to a new report by Deadline, a movie based on the classic Space Invaders arcade game is in the works at New Line Cinema.

This popular video game was created by Tomohiro Nishikado and released back in 1978. It would give the player control of a spaceship with the ability to slide from one side of the screen to the other and shoot at infinite waves of descending enemies. But you know what Space Invaders is, who doesn't? It was the best-selling video game and highest-grossing entertainment product of its time.

Space Invaders isn't the only video game movie that New Line have lined up for themselves. They're also working on a live-action Mortal Kombat movie. Greg Russo, the screenwriter of the Mortal Kombat reboot, will serve the same role for the Space Invaders film. He's also responsible for the script of Constantin Film's upcoming theatrical adaptation of the Resident Evil video game franchise.

It's said that the newly announced film will be produced by Weed Road Pictures' Akiva Goldsman and Safehouse Pictures' Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. And that's about all we know about the Space Invaders movie thus far. We'll be sure to notify you with more information as it's revealed.
