Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opened in the U.S. this past Friday but already opened in Japan on December 23, where it has already grossed $35M.  With the film opening in more territories besides North American this weekend, it looks as if the much maligned Sony/Screen Gems franchise will push past the $1B global box office mark. Through Wednesday, the box office total for all six RE films currently sat at $954M.

Sony is projecting a $30M opening North America weekend and with additional international markets opening, The Final Chapter will likely push the franchises total past $1 billion over the weekend or sometime early next week.

Per Deadline, the Resident Evil movies averaged a box office spilt of 60%-40% international vs domestic, however the previous two films - Afterlife and Retribution saw the international market account for roughly 80% of the their respective box office hauls.
