Get ready to mine and craft some more! Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess has revealed that there are already talks about a sequel to the blockbuster video game adaptation.
In an interview with Deadline, the topic of a sequel to A Minecraft Movie came up with Hess revealing "there's already talk about it happening." And judging by his excitement, it sounds like he'd return to the director's chair for it.
Oh, man. Well, it would be so much fun. We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.
While the exact premise of a sequel is still likely being ironed out, the post-credits scene of A Minecraft Movie did tease the inclusion of another popular character from the video.
"The character we teased is Alex, the other massively critical character in Minecraft," Hess revealed. "It’s Steve (Black) and Alex, and so that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt."
A Minecraft Movie blew past expectations at the box office, grossing a record-breaking $163 million domestically. It is the biggest domestic three-day opening ever for a movie based on a video game, topping 2023's The Super Mario Bros Movie, which grossed $146 million. Funny enough, The Super Mario Bros. Movie also starred Black — who plays Steve in A Minecraft Movie — as the voice of the titular bad guy Bowser.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $204 million over the five-day Easter holiday weekend, eventually going on to gross more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Currently, A Minecraft Movie sits at $313.7 million globally, so it still has a bit more mining to do to catch up.
A Minecraft Movie has succeeded at the box office despite poor reviews. It sits at just a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics consensus that reads: "Ostensibly a film about celebrating creativity, A Minecraft Movie provides a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to amusingly romp around in a story curiously constructed from conventional building blocks."
Despite its flaws, general audiences do seem to enjoy seeing the popular video game come to life don't the big screen. The success of A Minecraft Movie has even led to speculation that Fortnite, another popular video game, could also get a movie adaptation.
