As the theatrical release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie approaches, so too do press stuff and little tidbits. On Saturday, Donkey Kong actor Seth Rogen took to the movie's official Twitter to listen to the iconic DK Rap.
He ends up coming out of it positively, but before the listening session even starts, he jokingly calls the rap "objectively one of the worst rap songs of all time." Granted, the song's legacy and its absurdity make it endearing to the fanbase.
This post obviously didn't go unnoticed by more prominent figures in the Donkey Kong community, including the composer of the rap itself. In response to the video, composer Grant Kirkhope took to Twitter, where he expressed his excitement and detailed how if you told him his "worst rap track in the history of rap tracks" would appear in a Mario Bros. movie, he'd be "bursting with excitement." Though, he probably still is excited to see the track is still getting a fair bit of love even to this day.
"If you’d told me in ‘97, when I wrote the worst rap track in the history of rap tracks, that it would go on to be in a Mario Bros movie I’d would’ve burst with excitement! Long live the DK Rap!"
The song was initially found as the opening to 1999's Donkey Kong 64 and found itself turned into one of those memes that will never die.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits theaters on April 5, so fans don't have too much longer to wait.
