Nintendo's THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Live-Action Movie Has Been Delayed

The live-action The Legend of Zelda movie has been delayed and will no longer be released in theaters on March 26, 2027. In an announcement on social media, franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that the film had been pushed back a couple of weeks, vaguely citing "production reasons." The eagerly awaited movie will now be released in theaters on May 7, 2027.

"For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027," Miyamoto wrote. "It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience."

A delay is never fun news for fans, but on the bright side, it now means the void left by Marvel shifting Avengers: Secret Wars to December has now been filled.

News of a live-action movie based on the beloved Nintendo franchise was first confirmed back in November 2023. However, few details have been shared since. Sony Pictures is co-developing the project with Nintendo, and Wes Ball (The Maze Runner) is attached to direct.

There's still no official word on casting or story details; however, there have been some divisive rumors of late. Just last month, it was reported by industry insider Daniel Richtman that Cuckoo and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes star Hunter Schafer is being eyed for the role of Princess Zelda in the movie.

Reaction to the rumor, which was never even confirmed by Nintendo, was, of course, mixed. While the 26-year-old Shafer certainly looks the part, the internet was split over the idea of the iconic Princess of Hyrule being portrayed by a trans woman.

But beyond this single casting issue, there hasn't really been much to talk about regarding The Legend of Zelda movie.

Developed and published by Nintendo, the first game in The Legend of Zelda series was released in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System in Japan and the NES in North America. There have since been 19 mainline titles, the most recent being 2023's Tears of the Kingdom. While each game in the series has its own take on the legend involving Link, Princess Zelda, and Ganon/Ganondorf, the long-running action-adventure franchise often centers on themes of heroism, destiny, and the battle between good and evil.
