As well as the reveal of the first official open-world Sonic the Hedgehog game, The Game Awards event that took place last night saw the reveal of the first official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as you can see here.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, based on the SEGA video game series of the same name, is a sequel to the 2020 film that starred Jim Carrey as the nefarious Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular blue blur. The follow-up will introduce fan-favourite characters from the game series in the form of Knuckles and Tails, who will be voiced by Idris Elba and Colleen O'Shaughnessey respectively.

The trailer revealed that Knuckles will play a villainous role in the sequel, playing second fiddle to Carrey's Robotnik. He's a frightening match for Sonic's power and this new artwork released (via Toonado) by storyboard supervisor and character design lead Tyson Hesse definitely reflects that.

The red echidna is bathed in ominous darkness while Sonic and Tails take to the forefront, each with their own cute accessory. Check it out below (via @tyson_hesse):
