Paramount Pictures debuted the first trailer for their live-action
Sonic the Hedgehog movie back in April. It was met with an unprecedented amount of backlash due to the design of the titular speedster.
The creator of the iconic character being one of the dissenters.
Now that Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which reveals an updated character design based on the criticism, what does Yuji Naka think this time around? Well, the co-creator of
Sonic the Hedgehog agrees with the masses that it's an absolutely massive improvement. However, he still isn't quite pleased.
“This is the new trailer with Sonic’s new design. The design is much more Sonic-like now that he’s wearing gloves. However, his eyes still aren’t joined together, as expected. I can’t help but feel weird about that one point. But I’m looking forward to the movie’s release," read Naka's tweet (translation courtesy of
DualShockers).
There's one aspect which Naka is a stickler for and it's Sonic's traditional cyclops-eye. Usually, in the video games at least, Sonic the Hedgehog appears to have two eyes but they're actually connected above his nose. It's confusing and you might not have noticed it before but fans have been happy with it for countless years. Paramount Pictures evidently decided against it, for whatever reason.
In another tweet, Naka explained that he'd still be up for watching the original version.
“Sonic’s new design for the movie is out. However, it seems they’re making it as if the old design didn’t exist, as the movie official account’s old tweets were deleted. I wanted to see a special DVD version of the movie which used the old design. Too bad."
Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theatres on February 14th, 2020.
