When the
Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie got its first trailer, fans were very quick to point out how disappointed they were with the character's new look; a new look that even disappointed Sonic's original designer.
Because of the whopele controversy surrounding the Sega's beloved
Blue Hedgehog, Jeff Fowler — the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie Director — announced that they had heard the complaints from fans and that Sonic's look would be redesigned to make him look more like his video game counterpart.
The news about Sonic getting a redesign bode very well with fans, especially since they managed to pull this off within a day since Paramount released the trailer online, but it seems that not everyone involved in the movie is on board with the changes — and the reasons are quite valid.
Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik in the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie, has recently revealed that he doesn't really like the audience being part of the creation process, especially because sometimes the masses don't necessarily know what they want.
"I don’t know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation of it while it’s happening. So, we’ll have to see what that entails, because sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something, and then when it get it, it goes, 'Okay. I just wanted it. I didn’t care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon’ or whatever.'"
While Jim Carrey is in his right to voice his opinions and concerns, it is likely that this change won't be affecting the movie as a whole, but only the character's design. hopefully the change is only an aesthetic one, because changing anything else at this point would only mean reshoots and more delays.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theaters on the 14th of February.
