Almost two weeks ago,
Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in theatres. The live-action movie is based on the popular and iconic video game series and character of the same name. Ben Schwartz plays the titular speedster, Jim Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden plays Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter plays Maddie Wachowski — while Jeff Fowler directs.
Back when
Sonic the Hedgehog first arrived in theatres, the movie earned $57 million in the United States and Canada — and over $100 million at the worldwide box office. You can
find out more about the movie's opening numbers by clicking here.
More recently, the video game movie made $26.3 million during its second weekend in theatres and managed to remain at the top spot — despite strong competition from Harrison Ford's
Call of the Wild.
This means that the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie has overall made $107 million domestically and $97 million internationally. Overall, the video game movie has surpassed the $200 million mark — having earned $204 million precisely (via
Box Office Mojo).
What's more, this is without the influence of Japan or China as the movie hasn't debuted there yet. It will debut in Japan sometime next month but has been indefinitely delayed in China due to Coronavirus concerns —
find out more on that here. It will be interesting to see how significantly those regions affect the movie's overall gross.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
