Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered was surprisingly announced in May of this year, confirmed to release for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. Now that the game's almost about to become available, some interesting details about its development have made their way online.
In the latest entry on the official PlayStation Blog,
Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered Producer John Melchior has revealed that he actually had to fight Vivendi and Atari in order to introduce the new recruit in the game — as the developers wanted players to play as the
Real Ghostbusters.
According to Melchior, the reason why neither Vivendi nor Atari wanted a new member in the team was because they wanted players to "play as the cast", but Melchior had a different idea in mind; one that would actually benefit the game even more.
"
The rookie (new recruit) was a massive fight internally at Vivendi and then even with Atari. They really wanted to “play as the cast.” This was something I really fought for and eventually won. The reason why was simple. I felt people wanted the characters to have the same chemistry as they did in the films. A pillar of this was timing. So, by playing a character that had no lines, we were able to craft that timing," explains Melchior.
While Vivendi and Atari's idea makes sense for a proper marketing strategy — considering that fans would've obviously wanted to play as the original members — Melchior's idea actually allows players to be part of a Ghostbusters adventure; and idea that worked even better than anyone could've anticipated at the time the game originally released.
