During this past New York Comi-Con, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics took the opportunity to unveil Kamala Khan (a.k.a. Ms. Marvel) as one of the new playable characters in the highly anticipated
Marvel's Avengers.
While Ms. Marvel has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, people who don't read comics may not be too familiar with the character at all — and having Kamala join the team in
Marvel's Avengers is the perfect way to introduce her to a new audience.
The official Marvel's Avengers Twitter account has recently shared some interesing information about Kamala Khan; revealing that Ms. Marvel co-creator Sana Amanat has been closely working with the team at Marvel Games because they "
really wanted to do justice to the original Ms. Marvel designs."
One of the interesting aspects of Kamala is that she is a fan of the Avengers, which is reflected in the first trailer for the game; where Kamala is narrating her experience after meeting the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
According to Tore Blystad — Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics — they "
wanted Kamala to have a strong origin arc from fan girl to Super Hero, as a representation of the player’s journey - the player’s perspective is aligned with Kamala’s."
When it comes to Ms. Marvel's outfit, in particular, the character was slightly redesigned, but she mostly retains her original, and iconic Ms. Marvel costume from the comics.
"We took the core inspiration from the iconic Ms. Marvel costume from the comic, especially the Ms. Marvel #2 cover. But since our Kamala has to stand side-by-side with the other Avengers, she gets some help from Tony Stark who designs and makes her outfit. The materials are partly inspired by her cultural heritage and modern tactical materials and cuts."
In every costume that Ms. Marvel will be wearing in the game, the bracelet is the only element that the developers have decided to keep, and this is because they are important to Kamala.
"
The bracelet is the only element that is shared across all of Ms. Marvel's outfits. It is a family heirloom that she got from her grandmother, and she uses it to keep her most precious possessions safe when on the job."
Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics keep sharing interesting details about
Marvel's Avengers and even introducing new members of the team.
While the reception to the E3 trailer may have been somewhat lukewarm, the developers have managed to win fans over with all the content they are adding to the game; content that shows how much they care about the characters and the lore around them.
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Marvel's Avengers will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on the 15th of May in 2020.
