Prior to its October launch, Red Dead Redemption 2 was easily one of the most highly awaited video games of 2018, and it looks years of waiting have paid off big time. Rockstar Games‘ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has now officially declared that the acclaimed sequel's sales have already outpaced the original game’s total lifetime figures after just a couple of weeks of being available.

When it comes to sheer numbers, the open world game from Rockstar has seen 23 million copies sold through to retail, beating Take-Two's expectations. Considering that its beloved predecessor has sold around 15 million since its launch in 2010, it's safe to say that RDR2 has already surpassed the original's lifetime figures by over 8 million units sold, which surely makes hard-working folks at Rockstar happy.

As for Red Dead Online, it is trending ahead of how GTA Online was performing by the same point in its lifecycle. "It's a beta offering, of course. And it's gone about as we had expected," says CEO Strauss Zelnick. "What's really exciting is that during December, combined monthly active users of Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online took Rockstar to a new record. We feel great about it. Obviously the experiences are a work in progress, and there will be a lot more content to come."

As you probably remember, Red Dead Redemption 2's impressive list of initial benchmarks also includes the second biggest launch (three days) in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases, biggest entertainment launch of last year, most pre-ordered full game ever on Sony's PlayStation Network, and biggest day one full game sales ever on PSN, with more records to come in the future.
