It was recently revealed that the World Health Organization (WHO) will officially recognize gaming disorder beginning in January of 2022, referring to it as
"characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour... which may be online (i.e. over the internet) or offline."
Gaming disorder will be classified alongside cocaine, opioid, and alcohol dependence under "disorders due to addictive behavior" in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and it is the first non-substance related disorder since gambling to be classified.
To discover whether or not gamers are really taking things too far, a team at Clutch recently performed a survey of over 1500 gamers using a modified version of the Greenfield Video Game Addiction Test.
Several topics were honed in on, including which gender exhibits more addictive gaming behavior, which games are proving most addictive to players, where gamers who are most addicted are employed, and more. As you can see,
Minecraft, Red Dead Redemption, For Honor, Overwatch, GTA V, Gears Of War, Fortnite: Battle Royale, and more make the list of addictive titles.
