Just yesterday, and completely out of the blue, Konami announced that they had partnered up with independent studio Ukuza to develop a brand-new action-adventure game called Skelattack. The game looks clean, and features a beautiful hand-drawn art style that really makes it stand out; for all the right reasons, of course.
Even more surprising was the fact that Skelattack was actually announced and released yesterday, and players can already purchase it on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC(Steam) stores for $19.99 USD.
The announcement trailer for the game actually made a lot of seasoned players, like myself, a bit nostalgic for the game, and that is mainly due to its art style being heavily inspired by VHS tapes from the 80s and 90s, which is actually one of the reasons why Konami contacted Ukuza in the first place.
Skelattack is also what the developers have called a reverse-dungeon crawler. Granted, the game is an action-adventure title with dungeon crawler elements, but what makes this one interesting is the fact that the people over at Ukuza wanted players to feel like they're playing as one of the dungeon dwellers who are trying to prevent humans from entering the dungeon.
For those players who may be interested in Skelattack and want to know more about this reverse-dungeon crawler, the people over at Inside Gaming recently interviewed the developers at Ukuza — who revealed some very interesting details about this intriguing new game.
Give it a watch:
Skelattack turns the platforming hero stereotype on its head by putting players in the shoes of Skully, a skeleton fighting to protect his home. As a member of the newly deceased and just getting the hang of being dead, Skully’s newfound home and friends are attacked by humans. Instead of seeking gold or other treasure, the humans kidnap Aftervale's elder skeleton, Elzedon, and attempt to steal the magic that kindles the spirits of the dead - the Blue Flame. Together with Imber, Skully’s trusty bat friend, players will jump, slash, and flap their way through the Underworld in an attempt to stop the human threat, save the Elder, and protect the Blue Flame.
Skelattack is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC(Steam).
