In March of last year, Daedalic Entertainment and Middle-earth enterprises announced that they were working on a brand-new game based on the popular The Lord of the Rings series — revealing that the game was expected to release for PC and "all relevant console platforms at that time" in 2021.
What makes things even more interesting is that the developers chose not to focus on the series' heroes, but on Gollum — who's actually one of the main antagonists in The Lord of the Rings; giving players a whole new perspective on this character and his tragic journey.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has since been confirmed to release for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but much information about the upcoming title has been rather scarce to non-existent. We do know, however, that the game will shed light on some of the events that take place prior to the story presented in the books.
It is also worth mentioning that the developers have mentioned that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be a story driven game, and Sméagol/Gollum being the game's main character could not be any more perfect of a choice.
Today, and thanks to the people over at GameStar, we now have a small batch of in-game screenshots and concept art that give us our first look at Middle-earth and the titular character in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
Surprisingly enough, both Middle-earth and Gollum look like they were based almost in their entirely on Peter Jackson's version of The Lord of the Rings; surprising indeed, considering that Daedalic Entertaiment CEO Carsten Fichtelmann said that the game wouldn't look too hyper-realistic.
While Gollum and some of the other characters shown in these screenshots/concept art do look like slightly more cartoonish versions of their movie counterparts, the developers have definitely drawn some inspiration from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
