Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is Rocksteady's first game in 9 years, though early word on the title isn't overly positive. The project has been mired in controversy for several weeks, with a string of apparent plot leaks leaving DC fans fuming about the fact the Justice League will die at Task Force X's hands.

An argument could be made that the clue is in the title. Regardless, with this being the late Kevin Conroy's final performance as Batman, fans are eager for his Dark Knight to go out on a high.

For those of you unaware, the story takes place in the same timeline as the Batman: Arkham trilogy. Seeing as Arkham Knight ended with Bruce Wayne seemingly faking his death before taking on a nightmarish new persona thanks to Scarecrow's fear gas, fans have wondered how and whether that will be addressed in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Rocksteady Studios' Production Manager, Jack Hackett, recently spoke with ComicBook.com and strongly hinted that we'll finally get some answers about Batman's return in this loose follow-up.

"Yes, you will [get answers]. There's a bunch of ways we convey what happened in the five years between Arkham Knight and Kill the Justice League. There's one big set piece quite early on in the story, which, I don't want to give it away, but in a really fun way, kind of takes you through the core beats of what happened, how the Justice League got together, what happened with Bruce, with Batman, and other details there. Particularly for big lore and DC and Arkham-verse fans."

"There's some really fun ways you can find out a lot of the details and get some of the kind of background story. And then, yeah, through the Metropolis, through the Hall of Justice, through lots of different spaces and avenues in the game, there's lots of details on what the characters from all three of the Arkham games have been up to since Arkham Knight."

"And, I think there are probably some characters that are going to pop up that Arkham-verse fans will certainly recognize but probably don't think are going to appear in this game, [such as Aaron Cash]."

It's hard to escape the feeling that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will tarnish the Arkham trilogy's legacy and Rocksteady's standing as a premium game developer. For a time, it sounded like they were working on a Superman title but this effort - which, troublingly, seems to be in the same vein as Marvel's Avengers - is what we're getting instead.

From Rocksteady Studios, the creators of the Batman Arkham series, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a genre-defying third-person action shooter where the ultimate band of misfits must do the impossible to save the world: Kill the Justice League.

The game will be released on February 2 on all major platforms.
