Capcom says Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold more than 1 million units on launch day. The game shipped September 4 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam, Epic, and the Microsoft Store. That first-day number also pushed lifetime Onimusha sales past 10 million. Capcom posted the figures September 7.
This is the first new Onimusha game in more than 20 years. The last mainline game was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Way of the Sword is a sword-action game with Miyamoto Musashi in an Edo-period Kyoto twisted by Malice. Capcom’s own line is that the new tech is there to sharpen the old series feel: sword fights, a story, and a look it keeps calling beautiful. Some coverage notes Capcom used the likeness of the late actor Toshiro Mifune for Musashi.
Capcom credits the open with "several marketing initiatives" before launch: multiple demos and hands-on exhibitions aimed at players who never touched the PS2 games. The same release also says the company will keep putting out major new titles each year and will keep re-activating IPs that have been sitting cold. Way of the Sword is the example they attached to that sentence.
How the million compares
Capcom did not break out platforms. Some snapshots had PlayStation 5 at about 87 percent of that market’s split. SteamDB logged a peak of 85,081 concurrent players, which is why PC write-ups keep calling Steam a real slice even without an official PC number. Pragmata needed two days to pass 1 million earlier this year. Resident Evil Requiem did more than 5 million in under a week in February. Way of the Sword is not that Resident Evil launch, but it did pretty well for a 20-year gap closing at a million in 24 hours.
Capcom’s year already includes Requiem, Pragmata, and the Dark Arisen expansion for Dragon’s Dogma 2. Mega Man: Dual Override is the 2027 name they keep pointing at, the first new Mega Man since Mega Man 11 in 2018. Way of the Sword sits in the middle of that reactivation list: old logo, new engines, demos first, million later.
The Blood of Dawnwalker also crossed 1 million around the same weekend, without a 24-hour claim attached. September’s calendar still has bigger branded releases incoming. Capcom’s number is the one with a date stamp.
Reviews that are already out have been kind. Nintendo Life scored it 9/10 as a revival that moves the combat forward and still feels like Onimusha. PC Gamer’s review sat at 83 and warned the demo’s difficulty was not the whole game. Those scores are not the end all be all, but it paints a nice picture. The sales story is a dormant samurai series opening like a current Capcom release.
If you played the demos, you already know whether the parry timing is for you. If you sat out because Onimusha felt like a museum piece, the million is Capcom telling shareholders the museum still prints.
