The Disney & Marvel Games Showcase was full of exciting new and announcements, but the one that stole the show was the reveal of Skydance New Media's Marvel game. Announced last year, all we knew about this game was that it's a "narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game, featuring a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe."
Today, we got a clearer understanding of what that will entail.
Although we still don't have an official title, the brief teaser did reveal the game's two stars: Captain America and Black Panther. Together -- along with two additional yet to be revealed heroes -- they will take on the forces of Hydra during World War II.
The tagline teases "Four Heroes. Two worlds. One war," which suggests the game will take place in Wakanda as well as Europe.
Although not confirmed, it's speculated that the game is inspired by the comic book series Black Panther/Captain America: Flags of Our Fathers. The four-issue limited series sees Steve Rogers (Captain America) team up with King Azzuri (Black Panther), the grandfather of T’Challa, Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos to combat the nastiest Nazi villains.
According to an official press release, the two other characters joining Captain America and Black Panther are Gabriel Jones, a U.S. soldier and member of the Howling Commandos; and Nanali, leader of the fledgling Wakandan Spy Network.
Four Heroes. Two Worlds. One War. In collaboration with Marvel Games, Skydance New Media is proud to share the first look at our new AAA game with an ensemble cast and original story set in our unique #Marvel Universe.
No release date or platforms were announced, but we can probably expect this title to come to next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Amy Hennig, the award-winning game director and script writer, is best known for her work on Naughty Dog's Uncharted franchise. In 2019, Hennig helped form Skydance Media's interactive division with a focus on story-focused experiences and interactive series. Although we've known about this game for a while, it's nice to finally get a glimpse of what's in store for Marvel fans.
Skydance New Media is also reportedly working on a Star Wars game led by Hennig. Unfortunately, it wasn't teased during today's showcase. Similarly, not much is known about this project as well except that it's a "cinematic action-adventure featuring an original story in the Star Wars galaxy."
With this brand new Marvel game now officially revealed, we'll hopefully get more concrete details in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, check out the teaser trailer below and look out for any hidden clues or Easter Eggs that could help uncover more details about what is sure to be a blockbuster title.
