Game director of Rocket League, Scott Rudi recently revealed that a sequel to the popular car-combat game isn't currently a possibility.
Rudi believes that the game's current "games-as-a-service" model is enough to sustain the game - which would make rolling out a sequel totally superfluous, especially on an annual basis cough cough Fifa, Madden, NBA 2K - EA Sports (it's in the game) basically.
The game director recently discussed the topic with GameSpot. Thankfully, Rudi's mentality is very pro-consumer; instead of taking advatage of Rocket League's immense popularity and making an unchanged follow-up; Rudi thinks that, until a significant enough innovation comes along, Psyonix should remain focused on the current title:
That's preferable to do; games-as-a-service...the most valuable thing in our game is our fans...we want to keep this going. I don't know what I'd do with Rocket League 2. I'd rather do more to expand the existing Rocket League. It's doing great, there is a lot ahead of it. So yeah, we have no plans for Rocket League 2.
The popular soccer game currently has 45 million registered players, with 6-7 million of those playing regularly every month. The constantly added cosmetics and add-ons have gone a long way in extending the game's lifespan - this is a model which many games are starting to pick up on nowadays.
What do you think about Rudi's comments? Would you like to see a follow-up to Rocket League?
