If a series of tweets are to be believed, a remake of the original Mortal Kombat fighting games could be on the way.
Since last month, Joe Tresca, CEO of the indie game studio Eyeballistic, has been posting cryptic tweets on X that suggest the developer could be working on remakes of both Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II.
"I'm not sayin, but just sayin, we might be cooking up something special over at Eyeballistic," he wrote alongside an upscaled screenshot of Mortal Kombat II.
The teaser was actually met with mixed response. It's not that gamers wouldn't like to see the classic fighting games remade, but the screenshots were criticized for the apparent use of AI, something that Tresca didn't exactly deny.
The latest teaser was posted just this week and featured an AI-upscaled screenshot of the original Mortal Kombat game from 1992. However, users again quickly pounced on the use of AI as well as the lack of official announcements.
As one user pointed out, Sub-Zero has six fingers in the image above and there's something weird going on with the ninja warrior's outfit.
Over on the Eyeballistic website, the studio describes itself as a "dedicated team of developers, designers, artists, programmers, and most importantly gaming enthusiasts."
"We're the team behind the MKHD fan project where we infamously appealed to series co-creator, Ed Boon, to remake the original MK games in HD!" the about us section reads. "Though MK IP owner Warner Bros. initially gave our team the green light to work on the project, they abruptly changed their minds based on evidence it might cannibalize sales of their main line 2019 MK game thus ending Eyeballistic's involvement."
Warner Bros. has still not announced any sort of plans for a remake of the two classic games. In fact, the publisher just released Mortal Kombat 1 last year, a reboot of the series and a sequel to 2019's Mortal Kombat 11.
It's possible now that Mortal Kombat 1 has been out for a year, the publisher could be exploring a proper remake of the classic game, but again, this is purely speculation.
It's also possible that Tresca could be posting these cryptic teasers to drum up hype for their studio. As the studio notes on its website, they are currently working to "produce our own fighting game which we're seeking to release within the next year."
While members of the studio each have their own individual development experience, the studio itself doesn't have much under its belt right now. They've got a fighting RPG named Lawless in development along with a action RPG called Coldblood. The studio also released the VR music rhythm game Beatron 2000 for Oculus Go.
