Almost two weeks ago, Greg Russo took to social media to announce that the
Mortal Kombat movie had begun filming. It continues to do so to this day,
as evidenced by a recent set photo from Lewis Tan. Russo serves as the screenwriter of the
Mortal Kombat movie, a position he also fills for the
Resident Evil and
Space Invaders movies that are in the works.
Thus far, a bunch of characters and actors have been announced as a part of the
Mortal Kombat movie. Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Jax, Raiden, Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, and Mileena will all feature in the live-action movie and they will be played by Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Mehcad Brooks, Tadanobu Asano, Chin Han, Ludi Lin, and Sisi Stringer respectively.
However, Russo recently returned to social media (
@WriterRusso) to these that we haven't heard the last of character announcements as there are more that are yet to be revealed. He also reiterated that some characters will be not be included in the film as to not overstuff it —
find out more on that here.
As for who the remaining characters could be, some likely contenders are as follows: Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kano, Goro, or Reptile. Those characters are mainstays of the game series and all featured in the original instalment back in 1992.
The live-action Mortal Kombat movie is set release on March 5th, 2021.
